The latest Victorian Live Music Venue Audit confirms that Victoria remains Australia’s live music heartland, with 2,441 live music venues identified across the state - more than any other state.

The audit maps the breadth of Victoria’s live music spaces – from pubs and clubs to community halls and major rooms. Importantly, 45% of all venues are in regional Victoria, highlighting the statewide reach and cultural impact of live music.

The audit further demonstrates the substantial economic value generated by the sector. With average single gig requiring an estimated 29 separate job roles involving 43 people and more than 140 hours of work, every gig represents an entire micro-economy, employing musicians, technicians, venue staff, managers, marketers, security and production crews.

In a climate where the live music sector has faced significant challenges including rising costs and changing consumer behaviour, the audit has revealed a decline in regular live music activity, with the number of venues hosting at least one gig per week falling 19.4% since 2019.

“Victoria’s venues are the lifeblood of our music culture,” said Fiona Duncan, CEO of Music Victoria. “They nurture artists, employ thousands of Victorians and power local economies. Behind every gig is an entire workforce. When weekly gigs decline, it’s not just artists who feel it, it’s jobs and livelihoods across the state. Protecting our venues means protecting musicians, employment and the creative infrastructure Victoria relies on.”
